All Austin ISD schools and offices will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to persistent hazardous road conditions and campus conditions. All extracurricular activities and athletic events are also canceled.
The decision to close was made following close consultation with local weather, transportation and public works officials. While road conditions have improved in some areas, several critical factors influenced this safety-first approach:
- Refreeze Concerns: While many roads are clearing, ice persists in shaded areas and higher elevations. These conditions are expected to worsen overnight as melted patches refreeze.
- Campus Hazards: With buildings vacant for several days, significant ice accumulation around facilities and walkways has created unsafe conditions for students and staff.
- Staffing Shortages: Many Austin ISD employees reside in surrounding districts that remain closed. These regional travel hazards can create staffing shortages that impact the district’s ability to operate schools safely.
We will continue to monitor conditions and share an update regarding Wednesday’s schedule no later than 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Families may access community resources to locate food assistance in their area while Austin ISD offices and schools are closed.
